Job Description
The job involves all aspects of the racing industry, riding on the farm, beach and track. General grooming, feeding and some vet care. You would also be required to attend races, for which there would also be cash bonuses when horses win (anywhere from one to a few hundred). Board is available, the house is a ten minute drive from the farm, with great sea views right near the beach in victor harbor. Food and board would be worth well in excess of two hundred dollars and the house and views are amazing.
Requirements
Looking for someone who's a hard worker and self motivated, must have a sense of humor and good english. There are normally four of us here, we work hard and fast, and have great fun away from work as well (must be good in a team situation). We ride and swim the horses at the beach, at the track, and on the farm. At present I have about 15 horses in work (including Alcopop, 2009 Melbourne Cup runner), two year olds and yearlings currently being broken (experinence with youngsters will also help)
Required Skills
Riding; Driving license; Handling Youngstock; Lunging; Trim/Pull; Exercising.
Required Expertise
Racing Flat; Flatwork.
Accommodation
The house is in Victor Harbor right on the beach overlooking Granite island (great sea and island views), and is very spacious and relaxing (very nice modern house with large bedrooms). All food is provided, we also eat out at least once a week (more often in summer) at various local restaurants and pubs (all paid for). The fridge is always full!
Benefits
Benefits include the potential for more money depending on your level of experience/expertise, cash bonuses when horses win, (so far in approx 4 years of training the stable has a place percentage 45% and winning strike rate of 32%), and there's the potential for winning money from the odd bet (not to encourage gambling :-)). We travel interstate for racing (mainly Victoria). You'll see everything from foaling to winning races and everything involved in the industry, a great learning experince!!
The Facility
At present I have approximately 15 horses in work, more spelling, and quite a few youngsters yet to be broken. I also breed and agist racing stock, with approximately 50 horses on the farm. The farm is very close to the coast (10 km) which enables us to do beach work, swim the horses, and to rush them. We visit the track about twice a week, either in Adelaide or Strathalbyn.
I also provide food and accomodation (top quality living! Sea views & great food) in Victor Harbor overlooking the beach and Granite Island.
