Qualifications
During my first year of college at Auburn University I had wanted to be a vet, so I took tons of biology classes. However, I changed my major, so I can't say I have any other courses under my belt that are applicable.
Duties of Current Occupation
grooming, clipping, lunging, starting new horses, training, feeding, cleaning stalls/grounds
Equine Work Experience
I have been riding horses for as long as I can remember, following my mom into the hunter jumper ring but also getting to work as a wrangler alongside my dad in Georgia. Once horses were not financially available I took any job that would let me be around them. Cleaning stables, grooming, catch riding, and eventually getting to work as an assistant trainer. I bounced around whatever show barns had horses to ride throughout Northern California. I spent 2 months learning about natural horsemanship on the East Coast. Moving back West I worked under Alix Kendall whose focus was on dressage but incorporated ideas I had learned from horsemanship into a rehabilitative training method focused on the development of horse and rider. From there I went back to the show-jumping world with a wealth of knowledge.
Specialities
I have worked with young horses as well as horses being retrained for new careers, quite a few quarter horses, and some thoroughbreds in this line of work. Although most of my experience and training has been with show jumpers. Along with that, I've been fortunate enough to gain a bit of knowledge from trainers focused on natural horsemanship.
Type of Ride Work
I have ridden ponies to fresh off-the-track thoroughbreds, my own show career sent me though equitation finals and up through 1.35 classes. Work wise though, I have spent a lot of time on the flat--getting the opportunity to start and retrain horses has instilled a sense of patience and an understanding of the importance of mastering the basics.
Competition Details
Yes. I competed in pony and young adult medal finals throughout California until I could no longer afford to. I have also been to shows including spending weeks helping train at Palm Desert International Horse Shows.
