Equine Work Experience
My hands-on experience with horses is limited, but the experience I do have is notable. I signed up for a two-week stay at a working horse ranch in the mid-west. I learned to catch, halter and tack. I also learned basic groundwork. They said I was a natural. I attended a two-day workshop with a fairly green horse. He wouldn’t side-up to gates or steps. By noon the next day, I was able to navigate the rope gate with him repeatedly and had him yawning all day with other obstacles. I also volunteered at a national horse show for about two weeks. I washed, groomed, iced, retrieved and returned horses to their stalls. I administered medications and kept appropriate records. I also served as the ring groom where I managed flies, brushed out tails, conducted final inspections of riders and horses before entering the rings, caught horses after events and returned them to the barn. I was offered a job at the end of the show but turned it down.
