Qualifications
I’m a fourth year Animal and Poultry sciences major with an equine emphasis. I have taken multiple equine courses (introduction to the equine industry and horse management laboratory). I am taking an equine nutrition and horse management course in the spring. I also plan on additionally taking a equine breeding management course in the spring as well.
Duties of Current Occupation
Cleaning, administering medications, exercise, and feeding. (Note that this is my job in my hometown that I work for on breaks)
Equine Work Experience
I volunteer as a shift leader at the Virginia Tech equine barns. I’m a member in the Collegiate Horseman’s association at tech. I’ve done 60+ hours of foal watch and experienced a live birth. In October I was selected to attend the Fasig-Tipton yearling sale in Maryland. Here we worked along side Chanceland Farm doing heavy fast paced work. Mucking 20+ stalls in a short period of time, bathing / grooming horses, and preparing horses to be shown during the sale. My duties in the volunteer program are mucking stalls, grooming, turning out horses, transporting hay, feeding, and other husbandry duties. In the club I have also participated in grooming, events, lunging clinics, foal watch, mare checks, foal training, post riding therapy for our horses, and service work.
Specialities
I volunteer at the equine barns at Virginia Tech. I participated in 60+ hours of foal watch in the spring, and experienced a live birth. In the program I am shift leader for my volunteer group. I work at an animal shelter back home and have trained multiple people during my three years there. This job includes heavy work of mostly cleaning and taking care of our animals health (administering medication, feeding, exercise). This job requires me to work fast and efficiently.
Type of Ride Work
Not much experience with riding, but took one year of lessons in 2022-2023.
